In my view, this is unacceptable…
They changed my background (previously there was a default blue window), placed an icon in the bottom corner of the screen that read “Learn more about this photo”, and re-added the search bar that I had previously removed.
Fortunately, I don’t have to deal with this on a daily basis.
I’m not sure how you messed up, because this has never happened to me, and I stay up to date.
maybe you need to try again.
Instructions:
- install any windows 10 version released before october 2023
- disable the search bar
- install KB5015684 (or wait 2-3 days for it install automatically)
- windows has added back the search bar “for your convenience”
This definitely doesn’t happen to everyone. I’ve never once had this happen and I’ve kept my windows up to date.
Maybe it’s a regional thing. After all the function primary purpose is to serve ads (sponsored content) and drive visits to bing, so there’s a chance that this malware-like behavior is enabled only in specific countries that drive more ad revenue
Weird, because I surely installed windows 10 before that date, turned off the search bar, and have definitely installed that update, but the search bar never popped back up for me. Maybe I’m just lucky.
i would not be surprised if they do AB testing and rollout
100% never seen this either and I’m a daily windows user who has had the search bar disabled since day 1
Probably could’ve worded this better.
Maybe a “What have you all setup to remove these features, how are you running windows, etc “
Best to lead with pure curiosity and questions than to lead with assumptions. We don’t know what we don’t know, and that also means that the depth of what we don’t know could be surprisingly deep.
Stay curious!

You could have blocked and moved on with your life but you chose to be a snob. Whose acting in bad faith here?
Do you have an easier time catching flies with vinegar or with honey?
I’m not trying to catch anyone. I’m just calling OP out as a liar. I don’t give a shit how OP or anyone else feels on the Internet feels about me.
In your opinion, I am a liar. That is your opinion. I will respect it
We can tell. Good luck with 0 people respecting you out there kid
If you use voyager you can filter keywords. I recommend filtering „elon“, „musk“, „tesla“, „spacex“… makes for a much more enjoyable experience.
And don’t forget to filter „xitter“ as that is probably also recommended.
bonkers this shit has 10 upvotes lmao
Oof, blaming the victim.
Nah, just calling out bullshit when I see it.
Yeah, well that’s the difference between us. I don’t believe OP, and I think this is just a troll. You can believe whatever you want, but I’m calling OP a liar liar pants on fire.
Sure, because it logically follows that the troll here is the “I had an irritating and unexpected behavior on windows” person, not the “Linux users are troglodytes” person.
FWIW, windows also did this to me as a part of the “oh god please oh please use Bing search on Edge” campaign.
I recently moved to Linux because windows did the first time setup pop up on me when I needed to use my 5 year old desktop in a time crunch before I was late.
When I got back, somehow despite me telling windows no to resetting my default browser to edge, my default browser was edge and windows had updated to windows 11.
Is it possible I misread the dialog because I was in a rush. Sure. It is. But also fuck microsoft.
Bullshit?
Nice try Microsoft
This shit is probably worse on windows 11, I’m still sticking with 10 for years even after it’s life cycle. And even after it gets hard to use im switching Linux. When my computer dies dies.
It even did the same thing with enterprise customers. All our machines suddenly started asking us to enable search. Like why do I need another thing when opening the Start Menu and typing is the same fucking thing?? And to fuck with my group policies and undo the customization I had is mega infuriating.
Test updates before deploying
They didn’t say they deployed it, also enterprise operating systems are generally expected to not suddenly change manually-set policies for users…
Well Microsoft can do whatever they want really. Testing can just help to see it coming before you get run over
Sweet wallpaper though

Why do you subject yourself to this? Cast off your chains, become a free $USER.
It’s clearly a VM
Shh you’re no fun.
Because it’s not our fucking choice, you imbecile. Corporate does as corporate wants. I can’t install your precious penguin on my work machine, okay??!
Skill issue, get a better job.
Damn, even as a Linux user I get tired with all these “windows bad” posts. Yes, we all know it sucks. No lemmy user wants to use windows.
I just run Windows 11 Enterprise and don’t see any of this crap
Do tell about this. Are there any downsides? Any compatibility issues with hardware or software?
Only downside is it tends to be a bit behind on feature updates which is probably a good thing. All hardware and software is completely compatible. The other bonus is it gives more fine grained controls over telemetry that home and pro don’t.
Okay this sounds like a major win win. I’m guessing security is probably better too. I’m building a new PC soon and this is looking incredibly enticing.
When they tell you they’re walking back Recall and it’s “off by default”, remember that they constantly do this shit.
“We’ve installed malicious spyware on your computer without you asking for it, but don’t worry, it’s off by default.”
“No.” (Installs GNU/Linux)
I’d love to meet the engineers who work on these “features”. How do they go along with this shit and sleep at night?
Like the fruit and internet search giant, they forced RTO and all the smart talent left.
So they have the B team, and likely a bunch of H1-B visa engineers that are basically indentured servants writing the code now. It’s just a paycheck and survival at this point.
All your data are belong to Microsoft
You don’t own your computer anymore, Microsoft just allows you to use it.
Somebody set up us the bomb!
We get signal.
What!
Main screen turn on.
It’s you!!
How are you gentlemen!!
Exactly.
The good old, “If it’s not your source, it’s not your computer.”
I wish there was an easier way to tell people about Ameliorated and give it a try. Having Windows update and edge removed has already been so much better.
Now I do have to mention that I still run the iso they offered back on version 21H1 which I prefer because installing Windows takes roughly 2 minutes until it’s ready to do whatever
Nice, looks really cool. Wanted to do a clean install anyway, will give it a try.

Chris Titus made this tool. I use it to debloat windows, disable all the telemetry, then pause all feature updates for two years and let only security updates through. As an added bonus (and if you want win11), he added a tool to create a micro windows iso. I am running the micro and it has been fantastic. I even removed defender and other garbage they force on people.
I wonder how many people confuse him for the comedian.
I assumed it wasn’t the comedian, but bought that he might be angry enough at Windows to make it happen.
Didn’t even know about a comedian with this name
He’s pretty good. Kinda like a left leaning Dennis Leary
Who’s Dennis Leary? 😂 Sorry, immigrant here and don’t know many people.
He’s a comedian from the '90s and early '00s
Here is an alternative Piped link(s):
Piped is a privacy-respecting open-source alternative frontend to YouTube.
I’m open-source; check me out at GitHub.
Oh, ok. Good thing I didn’t know him I guess.
Oh definitely look up Christopher Titus on YouTube he put all his standup specials on there for free.
Nah, look him up. He is actually funny, but a bit right wing these days. He was closer to mainstream in the '90s
Oh, and watch the video. It is funny.
I just did
I used a similar tool in the past. When I wanted to re-enable something, I forgot which tool I used to disable it, and I couldn’t actually get it working ever again
