That's the basis for this entire conflict, and has been since before Israel even declared independence. Jewish citizens of the area were legally second class citizens under the Byzantine empire which got broken up during the world wars for supporting the wrong side, and were frequently attacked by Islamic groups during that period.
Colonization? Jerusalem and the surrounding regions has been the primary home of the Jewish people for a couple thousand years. Just for clarity, Gaza is around 50km away from Jerusalem. How can you colonize the area where you've existed for literally millenia?
